Hailing from Washington State, she was raised in a Jewish family (though her father was Baptist), as Cannon’s mother had emigrated from Russia. In 1960, she made her big screen debut in The Rise and Fall of Legs Diamond, though she had small parts throughout the late 1950s. She is also the sister of jazz bassist, David Friesen. In 1969, she made her breakthrough appearance in Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice, in which she was nominated for both Academy and Golden Globe awards. Then, in 1971, she stared in five blockbuster films. She then began working as a screenwriter and director in various projects. In the 70s she went on to host Saturday Night Live and was a guest in the Muppet Show. In July of 1965, she married fellow actor Cary Grant, who was 33 years older than her at the time. Their daughter, Jennifer, who is also an actress, was born in 1966. In 1968 the couple divorced, though they fought for custody of Jennifer for years. Cannon married once more in 1985 to real estate investor Stanley Fimberg, though they divorced in 1991.
